What Made a Skeptical Nurse Trust a Hair Thinning System
By Ian Barnett, RN | Living Well with Ian
I don’t recommend things lightly. 10 years in nursing will do that to you — you learn to ask “where’s the evidence” before you ask “does it work.”
So when I started noticing my own hair thinning, I didn’t grab the first bottle on the shelf. I spent months researching before I ever touched the Monat IR Clinical Hair Thinning Defense System. And what I found is what convinced me to trust it, use it myself, and eventually become a Monat representative.
If you’re dealing with thinning, shedding, or hair that just doesn’t feel as full as it used to, I want to walk you through exactly what’s in this system and why it earned my trust — the same way I’d walk a patient through a treatment plan.
Hair Thinning Has a Lot of Possible Causes
Before we get to the solution, it’s worth naming the problem clearly. Hair thinning isn’t one thing. In my research — and in conversations with the people I work with — it usually traces back to one or more of these:
- Hormonal changes
- Medication side effects, including telogen effluvium
- Aging
- Stress
Different causes, but a common thread: something is disrupting the hair growth cycle at the follicle level. That’s exactly where a good solution needs to work.
The Three-Product Routine: Thickening Shampoo, Thickening Conditioner, Scalp Serum
The IR Clinical System is built around three products that work together:
Thickening Shampoo and Thickening Conditioner — the daily foundation. Fragrance-free, formulated to cleanse and condition without stripping the scalp or weighing hair down.
Hair Thinning Defense Scalp Serum — the targeted step. This is where the clinically studied ingredients go to work directly at the follicle.
Here’s what’s actually in it, and why each piece matters:
- CAPIXYL™ — helps strengthen, thicken, and densify hair by targeting the follicle environment.
- Melatonin and caffeine — a combination studied for its role in reducing the production of DHT, the hormone most closely linked to hair thinning.
- D-Biotin — a bioactive form of a nutrient your hair genuinely needs to grow healthy.
- Resveratrol and other antioxidants — soothing support for the scalp itself.
- REJUVENIQE® — Monat’s proprietary blend of 13+ plant and essential oils, rich in omega fatty acids and nutrients that are highly compatible with skin and hair.
That’s not a random ingredient list. Every piece is aimed at the same target: the follicle, where hair thinning actually starts.
What the Studies Show
I don’t put stock in “trust me” marketing. So here’s what Monat’s own testing found, with the studies noted honestly:
- Thicker, fuller-looking hair in 60 days, based on an instrumental test by a third-party lab measuring hair fiber diameter.
- 8 out of 10 consumers felt the product helped improve hair growth, based on a 14-day study with 39 participants at a third-party lab.
- Clinical studies showed 92% less hair fall and an instant 92% reduction in breakage, based on third-party lab testing.
Individual results vary, and these are manufacturer-sponsored studies, not independent peer-reviewed research — I think you deserve that context, not just the headline number. But as someone who read the ingredient science first and the marketing second, this is what actually moved me from skeptical to convinced.
How I Use It
Simple is sustainable, so here’s the routine: shampoo and condition daily with the Thickening duo, apply the Scalp Serum directly to the scalp, and give it time. Sixty days is the benchmark in the studies, and it’s the benchmark I’d give you too. Hair growth is slow by nature — consistency matters more than intensity here.
Why I Became a Monat Representative
I didn’t set out to sell hair care. I set out to fix my own thinning hair, and I researched it the way I researched everything in my nursing career — thoroughly, skeptically, and with an eye for what’s actually backed by science versus what’s just packaged well.
The ingredients convinced me. My own results kept me here. And now, when I talk to people who are dealing with hair loss from hormones, medication, aging, or stress, I’m not reciting a script — I’m telling you what worked for a nurse who almost didn’t try it.
Ready to Talk About Your Hair?
If any of this sounds like your own story — thinning that snuck up on you, a scalp routine that isn’t cutting it anymore, or just wanting a straight answer from someone who actually did the homework — I’m here for that conversation.
DM me “HAIR” and let’s figure out where to start.
Trust the process. Let me show you how simple this can be.
